Dottie Board

Sewage Discharge Board

Make UK water-company storm overflows visible in your home or office. Track active discharges nationally, by region, around a watercourse, or within a radius — with an animated fill metaphor and overlays you control.

Highlights

Scopes that match how you think about water

  • National view for the whole UK picture
  • Region for a named area like "south-east" or "scotland"
  • Radius around any lat/lng to focus on your nearest catchment
  • Watercourse to follow a specific river

Visualised in real time

The active discharge count drives a fill metaphor — set fill-scale to tune how dramatic a full board feels.

New discharges spawn animated drips so a sudden spill catches your eye even across the room.

Quiet by default, loud when it matters

  • Top-left active-count overlay (toggle off if you prefer minimalism)
  • Recent-window counter (1–168 hours) for context beyond "right now"
  • Standard Dottie schedule and sound controls

Who it's for

  • River swimmers, surfers, and wild swimmers checking conditions before going in.
  • Anglers, kayakers, and SUP communities tracking pollution events on home water.
  • Campaigners and journalists keeping water-company performance visible.
  • Coastal cafés, sailing clubs, and visitor centres surfacing real-time water health.
  • Catchment partnerships, councils, and water-related charities for situational awareness.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the discharge data come from?

The board reads from UK water-company storm overflow / Event Duration Monitoring (EDM) feeds via the Dottie worker. Coverage tracks public availability across the major companies.

Can I focus on my local river or beach?

Yes. Use radius mode with a latitude/longitude and a kilometre range, or watercourse mode with a river name (e.g. "River Thames"). Region mode also accepts English regions like "south-east" or "scotland".

What does the fill metaphor mean?

The board fills in proportion to active discharges divided by "fill scale" (default 200 events = full). Lower the fill scale for a more dramatic local view; raise it for national context.

Will it wake me up at night?

No — the screen and sound schedules apply just like every other Dottie Board. Configure quiet hours from the settings site.

Is the data real-time?

It is as real-time as the underlying water-company feeds allow. Some companies report near-live, others on a delay; the board surfaces whatever the worker has.
